History

The Scout Movement is a worldwide youth movement, started in 1907 in England by Robert Baden-Powell. Scouting is the largest youth movement in the world with over 30 million members across 161 countries, all with the same principle: One World, One Promise.

The Scouts of Namibia has a vibrant history dating back to the early 20th century, starting with the establishment of the first scout troop in the 1917. Introduced by missionaries and settlers, scouting quickly gained popularity, becoming a cornerstone for youth development despite the challenges of political and socio-economic changes.

During the mid-20th century, amid apartheid and the struggle for independence, the Scouts of Namibia became a unifying force for young people. It provided a space where youth from diverse backgrounds could come together, learn valuable skills, and build lasting friendships. This era saw significant growth in scout groups, emphasizing outdoor adventures, community service, and cultural exchange.

With Namibia's independence in 1990, the scouting movement embraced a new era of inclusivity and national development. Programs were updated to address contemporary issues like environmental conservation, health education, and social justice, ensuring scouting remained relevant and impactful. Membership surged as new scout groups flourished across the country.

Today, the Scouts of Namibia continues to thrive, preparing young people to navigate the modern world with confidence and responsibility. Our history showcases the enduring power of scouting to inspire and empower youth, fostering a brighter future for all. Join us in celebrating our rich legacy and be part of our ongoing journey of growth, leadership, and community service.
